Simple Pleasures

In an attempt to take better care of myself, I've been limiting my intake of certain products to one day a week. Saying no to cravings is not only good for the physical body, but the spiritual body, as well. One of the gifts of the Spirit is temperance, and I've discovered that it makes life sweeter when I practice being temperate.

I could have made a healthier choice than pancakes, but instead of piling on the maple syrup and butter, as I would usually do, I found them equally satisfying with fresh strawberries and a dollop of whipped topping, containing almost no sugar. As it turned out, I filled up before the plate was even empty.

On the way home from church Sunday, I texted my niece and said, “I need a pic of pie today.” A few minutes later, this one came through, making me laugh right out loud. I’ve been going back and smiling at it ever since. Now that right there is enough sugar to sweeten any day of the week. I couldn't help but share it with my peeps. You’re welcome.

As I write, an afternoon sun makes its way toward the horizon, sending light and warmth through the front door. I am listening to this collection of music and finding the day's worries are no match for Keith Kenniff's classical piano.

A few years ago, I hosted a blog party that was all about simple pleasures. Every week, I looked forward to seeing what the participants had discovered. Even though I no longer host this party, I still look for the simple pleasures in my world, and I'm never disappointed by their abundance, by their ability to lift my spirit and bring a satisfaction that runs deep.

Until next time, dear friends, I'd love to know what simple pleasures you're finding tucked in the hours of your day.

  6. Dayle, I wish I could just slurp down those awesome looking pancakes right through the computer screen...yum! Although I love my butter and maple syrup, I think the fresh strawberries and whipped cream make it look more like a dessert than breakfast anyway so, yeah....I'll go for that! Simple pleasures...funny you should mention that...that's what was on my mind when I posted to Vee's Note Card party this week..."Simplicity" was my theme...a game of checkers, picking wildflowers, sitting in a rocker looking at a mountain view...only to name a few :)

  7. Hello Dear Dayle...Oh, how well I remember Simple Pleasures. That was a lovely party. Let's see. One of my simple pleasures today was receiving a delightful phone call. Another was having lunch with a friend. Still another tonight----watching two episodes of The Waltons ! May you find many more simple pleasures all through the weekend ahead. Susan

  9. First off- I love that picture of that smiling baby- Don't you just MELT?
My SIMPLE PLEASURE this week has been holding the newest little grandgirl and I look down and she is SMILING in her sleep-which makes me smile in return. I know they say it is just a non-responsive reflex at this stage but I like to think she is smiling as she says goodbye tto the angels that surrounded her before she came to live with us. Blessings, Dayle. xo Diana

  11. OK, I just put my "PS" on the wrong post, didn't I?
I confess to really missing your "Simple Pleasures" meme ... but can't even grasp the work it must have taken to facilitate each week.
And you're right! We can still occupy our minds and posts with pleasures of the simple variety!

  18. I am coming by via Jerry - and agree, simple pleasures are often a joy. For me? Rainbows always. And nature.

  19. I visited this blog via Jerry's suggestion (As The Crackerhead Crumbles) and am glad I did. I too have been limiting sugar as part of my Lent participation (www.julieluek.blogspot.com). I will try, TRY, after to keep the spirit of it and as you suggest, limit indulgences to once a week after the spiritual cleansing. I too eat pancakes with fruit (sans syrup) and sometimes a dollop of vanilla yogurt-- also a yummy and filling alternative with a dose of protein. I'm going to add your blog to my Bloglovin' feed. :)

  20. Hi Dayle, just stopping by to say how delightful your blog is. Thanks so much for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. I have been having trouble with GFC and if I am already following you, and you following me, please forgive me. If not, please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris
